About Digital Xtra

Digital Xtra is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), a legal form unique to Scottish charities, and is administered and regulated by a single body, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (‘OSCR’).

Digital Xtra’s Directors are also Charity Trustees for the purposes of Charity Law and are known as Members of the SCIO. This Board is elected, for a set period of time, by other members at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). All members of the Management Board work on a voluntary basis.

Digital Xtra has three charitable purposes which translate into its vision:

  • The advancement of education
  • The promotion of equality and diversity
  • The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science

The Core Objective of Digital Xtra is to:

  • Inspire young people to learn digital technologies skills through high quality, exciting extracurricular activities, thus expanding the talent pipeline. 

Additional Secondary Objectives include:

  • Increase overall number of young people learning digital tech skills across Scotland
  • Dispel negative perceptions and stereotypes about digital technologies and careers in tech
  • Increase diversity and inclusion of young people learning digital tech skills especially among:
    • audiences from areas often excluded from digital tech activities through lack of local resources or geography (i.e., areas of high deprivation and/or rural isolation)
    • groups underrepresented in the digital technologies sector (i.e., girls and young women, minority groups, or children and young people with additional support needs)
  • Provide context to the skills being learned
  • Promote digital technologies as an attractive career path including highlighting the variety of careers in digital technologies

Main Activities

  • To raise funds through donations, sponsorship and grants from organisations – private, public and third sector – and distribute those funds by way of a grant giving scheme to eligible organisations registered companies or charities) to advance the use of technology, digital and computing science education via extracurricular activities and projects across Scotland
  • To increase exposure and advance the education of Scotland’s young people, in the subjects of technology, digital and computing science
  • To enhance the learning and participation of pupils and students within Scotland’s education system by providing and assisting in the provision of grants for technology and computing science activities not provided by the local education authority in the normal education curriculum
  • To inspire young people about technology and computing science through the positive promotion of the opportunity it offers, to develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to prepare for entry to any occupation, trade or profession on leaving any educational establishment
  • To encourage and increase the number of females, and other under-represented groups, of youth age participating in technology, digital and computing science related activities across Scotland
  • To accelerate the flow of young people from all backgrounds into technology careers within Scotland’s technology industry and help Scotland’s companies develop the technology skills they need for the future
